Why You Should Stay Away from Storm Chasers

A storm comes through your neighborhood, with high winds, hail, or intense rain. It doesn’t take long before a tree branch hits the top of your home, shingles start to fly off, or you’re left with divots the size of golf balls. Once the storm ends, you see the damage. (Or even worse, you might not see the damage!) Now what?

When storm damage like this occurs, don’t worry. There are local roofing companies that can help you to get the job done properly, quickly, and safely. What you don’t want to do is to turn to a storm chaser or roofing companies that come into the area from out of state to “help” when damaging weather takes a toll.

Why is it so important to go with a local contractor? There are several key reasons.

Why You Can’t Always Trust Others

Storm chasers may be good companies. Some are supportive services that just want to help. The problem is, they are often not licensed to operate in the state. They may not have proper certifications. And, there is no way for you to verify who they are or what type of experience they offer. Many don’t have any type of local reputation that you can count on, and that should worry you.

Consider the Structure’s Importance, Too

It’s also important for you to think about the importance of a licensed, insured, and experienced contractor. You need a professional you can rely on to do the work properly so that it keeps the weather and rain from the next storm out of your home.

Here’s the problem with storm chasers: Let’s say that the next time a storm occurs, you notice a few leaks. There’s damage because the roofing contractor made a mistake or didn’t do a good job. If they are a local company, you can call them and ask for immediate repairs. Most local companies can provide warranties to back up the product and the workmanship they offer. Storm chasers may say they do this, but you have no way to get a hold of them when the time comes.

Trusted by Your Insurer

Perhaps the biggest reason not to turn to storm chasers is that you need your home insurance company to work with them. Most storm damage to your roof is covered under your homeowner’s insurance policy. Many insurers require that the company doing the work for you to be fully licensed and insured. They may want to see proof of their certifications or licensing.

Out-of-state companies are unable to meet these goals. That may mean your insurance company doesn’t cover your claims. What’s more, there are many stories of consumers making down payments or paying for some of the roof repairs only to have these out-of-state contractors simply leave, without doing the work. With a local company, on the other hand, all the work is done through your insurer. You don’t have to pay out-of-pocket at all.

When You Use a Local Company, You Benefit

There are many benefits to local companies such as:

  • Immediate help to protect your home from further damage right after the storm.

  • Comprehensive repair services to get the work done properly.

  • They work directly with your insurance company, minimizing any risks.

  • You can easily verify their reputation, experience, and workmanship.

  • Warranties are available.

  • If there is a problem, you can count on a local technician to come to you to fix it.

For all of these reasons, you want to speak to a local roofer who can work with your insurance company to get the work done properly. You don’t pay anything more – your insurance pays for it – and you get confidence in your purchase.

The Bottom Line

There are fundamental differences between using a local, established roofing contractor versus using an out of town “storm chaser” contractor. A local contractor’s success depends on his reputation, the quality of work performed, building relationships with local communities, and being able to service those customers in the future.

Storm and out-of-town contractors are only interested in replacing your roof. They have to get the work done very quickly because of additional costs such as meals and lodging and are usually gone to the next state hit by a hail or windstorm when problems start to show up. Getting them to return a phone or return to your property to investigate often never happens.

Please don’t underestimate the importance of using a local roofing contractor.
