What do roofers put under shingles?

Installing a roof is a complex process that involves multiple components to ensure the roof's longevity and durability. Of these components, the layer underneath the shingles plays a critical role. In this article, we will examine the purpose and importance of the materials that roofers typically put under shingles.

Roof Decking: The first layer that roofers install under shingles is the roof decking. This layer consists of wooden boards that provide a sturdy foundation for the roofing system. Typically made of plywood or oriented strand board (OSB), it is installed on top of the roof trusses.

Underlayment: The second layer that roofers install under shingles is the underlayment, a water-resistant material placed between the roof decking and the shingles. The underlayment acts as an extra barrier against water, preventing leaks in the event of heavy rainfall or storms. At Shumaker Roofing Company, we use a synthetic underlayment (other companies will still use the outdate, felt, as their underlayment - which will deteriorate quickly!).

Ice and Water Shield: In areas that are susceptible to ice buildup, Shumaker Roofing installs an ice and water shield. This self-adhesive membrane is placed along the eaves, rakes, and valleys of the roof to prevent water from penetrating the roof in those areas.

Ventilation: Shumaker Roofing also installs ventilation products such as roof vents, ridge vents, or soffit vents to keep the attic space ventilated. Proper ventilation helps to prevent moisture buildup and the formation of mold and mildew. Proper roof ventilation is also now a building code standard!

Each of these components is vital to the overall health and longevity of your roofing system. The roof decking provides the necessary structure and support, while the underlayment and ice and water shield provide an additional layer of protection against water and moisture. Proper ventilation helps to keep the attic space dry, preventing mold and mildew from forming.

The materials installed under shingles are crucial to the roofing system's integrity and durability. By hiring Shumaker Roofing Company, you can ensure that your roofing system is installed correctly, providing the necessary protection and durability for many years to come.
