The Shumaker brothers, Jack and Lloyd, grew up in Montgomery County in the early 1900s. They started roofing in their late teens with the intention of starting their own business someday. But their dreams were put on hold when they enlisted in the Second World War.
When the war was over, they jumped into action and founded Shumaker Roofing Company. The Shumaker brothers held onto the business until the 1980’s when they were ready to retire.
That’s when Bob Schisler stepped in. Bob always had an entrepreneurial spirit. At just 8 years old, he started his own snowball stand in the summertime that kept others cool. Other jobs included a paper route, gardening for folks in Baltimore who would hire him, and even shucking corn at the Maryland State Fair. Every job taught him something about business and independence.
“I believe in doing the job neatly, correctly and to the fullest. I believe each customer deserves respect and a fair and honest job.” – Bob Schisler
In high school, Bob started working with his brother to build houses. That’s when he got his first experience with roofs and he loved it. Bob went off to college and got his degree in Business Administration.
After graduating, he was hired by B.F. Goodrich, a division of Trimco. Bob was trained as a technical service rep in Cleveland, Ohio and assigned a territory where Frederick was the central hub of his coverage area.
For years he traveled and perfected his craft: inspecting roofs, troubleshooting leakage or drainage issues, writing specs for either repair or replacement. He would then oversee the work, ensuring it was a high-quality job that was done according to manufacturer’s specifications.
But there was a huge downside to the position. He was traveling so much that he wasn’t able to spend time with his family. When he heard that the Shumaker brothers were looking to sell their business, Bob and his family decided to pursue that business so he could stay local and spend time with his family.
Under Bob Schisler, Shumaker Roofing has increased in size and become an established business in Frederick. Everyone here enjoys being involved with the community, including sponsoring the Korean War Vets golf tournament and supporting the local sports team. We will continue to give back to the community for all it has given us.
